This panel tracks the changes in the social policy response in East Asia (Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan) during the COVID-19 pandemic and their relationships with productivist welfare capitalism. Using data from a publicly accessible online policy tracker, known as COVID-19 Policy Response in East Asia, the speakers will show how COVID-19 policies in East Asia interact with the economic priorities, governance capacities, and politics in each of these societies.
The aims of this panel are to characterise the approach of these East Asian welfare states during the pandemic, to evaluate divergence or convergence from their productivist features, and to discuss the vulnerabilities and strengths of existing welfare state systems in responding to the various social risks posed by COVID-19 and other global and domestic threats.
